We must not forget that the holidays are unfortunately also the time when a massive number of pets are abandoned and shelters are completely full. Being concerned about your holidays’ organization in advance is a sign of the commitment you are making to your cat.
You have 3 options:
1/ Going with your cat to your holiday destination
First thing to check: is the cat legally able to travel?
To leave the French territory, your cat must be identified by chip and have a rabies vaccination. It is necessary to anticipate the process and make an appointment with your veterinarian to settle this step.
You want to travel by plane? You should know that the majority of low-cost airlines do not accept your pet. You must choose an airline that accepts pets and book your cat’s ticket. A limited number of pets are accepted per flight. You will also need to take a bag with the required dimensions.
For the train, it is also necessary to inquire about the conditions for the ticket and the bag, which can vary according to the routes and rail companies.
When traveling by car, you must make sure that you have a transport box adapted to the size of your cat and to the duration of your trip. Caution: do not leave your cat free in the car, it is forbidden and dangerous.
The cat can stay several hours without eating, drinking or littering, but don’t forget that it is sensitive to the heat. (Read our article “Prepare your cat for summer)
Upon your arrival, you should think about putting your cat in a room with all its belongings in order for it to adapt to the holiday territory. Do not let your pet go out in an unknown place, it could get lost. A secure place and/or a tether will allow it to enjoy its holiday.
2/ Having your cat kept at home:
In your absence, you can choose to have your cat looked after at home by a friend or a professional pet sitter. The person can settle in your home or make visits.
You can choose the number of daily visits to take care of your cat and small services for you (mail collection, plants watering). It is a solution that is well suited for cats who are territorial animals.
3/ Sending your cat to a boarding kennel:
You can give your cat to someone you know. It will be necessary to make sure to give it a personal territory (a room is enough) if the guardian has other animals. You will be able to bring its personal things so that it finds some familiar elements at its guardian’s.
You can also turn to a professional boarding kennel for cats. There are many offers on the market. It is advisable to visit the place for the first time to check that it corresponds to your expectations and to your cat’s needs by being extremely vigilant on sanitary questions.
Whatever the type of care you choose for your cat, the important thing is to take into account its needs. Depending on your cat’s character and the duration of your vacation, you will know what is best for it. Have a great summer!
